I stood on the beach watching the blue-green waves roll in one on top of the other. Each one bringing with it the foam of the surf reaching gently across the sand to my feet, the smell of salt to my nose and a welcome rest to my spirit. As I watched the rhythmic undulation of the sea I noticed that not every wave reached the same distance across the sand. I was intrigued and began to watch … each wave reached it’s farthest point and ran back to the sea. The biggest waves had so much force in their undercurrent that as the next one or two tried to crash on the shore, there was no way for them to come as far. It didn’t matter how big they were or how many came, the water rushing back to the sea impeded their progress.
Sin can be like that. We can be riding with the wave on the surface and not realize that right below something else is pulling in the opposite direction. Only as the undercurrent is exposed on the sand can we see it’s effect on our lives.
Sometimes it’s the seemingly small things that pull our feet out from under us. Idleness is one of those undercurrents. It’s nothing short of a waste. Idle hands, idle time, idle conversation … undercurrents rushing back out into the deep impeding our progress and cutting short the reach we were intended to have.
The Bible says:
Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
~ Colossians 2:18-19 [NIV]
Idle notions, wasted words, cause us to lose connection with the Head, with God and without Him we have nothing. So look below today…what is in the undercurrent of your life? If it is anything or anyone other than Jesus there is work to be done and a gracious Father to come back to.
Catch the Wave.
Thank you Laura, that is a very good analogy.
