In Proverbs 18:21 we learn that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” Usually when we think of this reference, we see it as a warning for us to watch how we speak and what we say. This is true, we should be careful not to poison lives with our words. However, our tongues are used for more than one task, for instance, eating. When we eat, we taste food and our tastebuds either enjoy or dislike what we consume. Interestingly enough, we tend to desire foods that are more unhealthy than good for our bodies…On yet another note, our tongues can be used for kissing. It has been considered perfectly acceptable and even sweetly romantic for a couple to exchange spit once they have been ‘going out’ for a while. It has been said that the ‘first kiss tells you everything’ and that kissing is just fun, no harm done, right?

Wrong! In a Courting relationship, it may seem stringent to hold back from kissing, but there is a real purpose in just waiting. If death and life are in the power of the tongue, what death can come from kissing someone you truly care about? In a Dating relationship, people kiss because they want to express how they emotionally feel; they want to be ‘closer’ to that other person. Courtship forces both parties to base their mutual affection on something deeper than physical attraction. By kissing someone you are giving a little piece of yourself away to them (which may be what you want at the time) but what if the relationship does not work out? How many times are you willing to give a piece of yourself away?
